Proverbs 3:28
Do not withhold good from those who need it, when you have the ability to help.
You know what today is? It’s Hump day. This is actually the official hump day of the entire year!
Yesterday, July 2, was the exact middle of the 365-day calendar.
That makes today—July 3—the first step over the hump! That’s right, welcome to the 2nd half of 2025!
Speaking of getting ‘over the hump’ that phrase reminds me of one of my favorite groups’ Parliament Funkadelic. And I believe it’s from the Chocolate City album, they dropped the anthem "Bop Gun (Endangered Species)," they were singing:
“On guard... defend yourself!
Movin’ right on you, baby!
And then the said this part:
When the syndrome is around... don’t let your guard down.”All you've got to do is
Call on the Funk, what??? Ohhh wait, this is my last part and then they said,
To dance is a protection.
Funk is your connection.
All you got to do is...
Funk and dance!
All types of symbolism in there, I can’t get into it now but listen:
That’ was more than music—this was like a manifesto for people embroiled in the struggle of their day!
Dancing wasn’t an escape—it was a defense.
The groove was how they pushed through chaos, oppression, fatigue.
It was how they got over the hump. That’s why they chanted…’got to get over the hump…got to get over the hump’...I gotta get over the hump…
Now let’s take it to the scriptures… Proverbs 3:27, wisdom says this:
“Do not withhold good from those who need it,
when you have the ability to help.”
Now what does that have to do with ‘getting over the hump’? Well listen:
The call is clear: Don’t delay the good. You shouldn’t reschedule joy, and you certainly shouldn’t reschedule doing good when the opportunity is right in front of you…don’t tiredness rob you of your blessing to be a blessing! Come on somebody!
If it’s in your hand—give it.
If it’s in your power—do it.
If it’s in your heart—say it.
That’s how we keep the rhythm strong, even when the beat seems to break down.
Now look at how all this syncopates like a good beat…
1. We’re at the Moment of Truth
We’re at July 3—the center of the year.
It’ll be easy to fade in the middle, to coast or collapse through the rest of the year, when you should be recommitting.
But hump days—whether in your week, or your year, or your entire life, —are not made for quitting.
They’re checkpoints for pressing through.
2. We’re in the middle of the Dance
“To dance is a protection…”
Think about that (i love that lyric):
We’re mid-beat. Mid-battle. Mid-blessing.
You may feel tired, discouraged, or even unseen.
But don’t step off that dance floor just yet.
Let go and let the groove have its way
3. This is a Real-World Check
Think about it: Right now, our country’s dealing with some hard realities.
A recent bill just passed yesterday by the House, called “big and beautiful” by some, offers little beauty to those hurting the most.
It favors the wealthy, cuts care for the vulnerable, and tightens the rope on people already living close to the edge.
And if your heard is breaking, that means your heart is working right.
Because nothing like that should have ever passed in our society.
This is purposely political—and that’s biblical.
When you can help and you don’t? That’s a problem.
When you delay justice or compassion? That’s a problem.
The scripture doesn’t whisper—it commands:
Don’t kick the can down the road.
Don’t say “Come back tomorrow.”
Do the good now.
We're just getting over the hump. We have the rest of the year to go through. This is our opportunity to do better.
Look:
You’re tired. I’m tired.
But we’re not done.
We’re dancing through the fatigue,
Giving what we can,
Staying present,
Cause we gotta get over the hump.
Prayer
We shall overcome—for YOU are the source of strength.
Today’s Challenge
Do a good deed that’s immediate:
Write. Call. Give. Speak up.
Don’t say “Come back tomorrow.”
Let today—this hump day—be the moment where you overcame with timely action.
